I’m going out from the presumption that writing this in English will be accepted by all members of the forum. This is my hand-on-heart meaning of what is happening right now, and I’ll stand by what I say. I’m prepared for criticism and thumbs-down, but frankly, I don’t give afuck. There are many problems in Lillestrøm right now, and we can see the causeof most of these. In my eyes, many of our “regulars” have been producing a series of poor performances for some time now,but that responsibility lies squarely with our coaching staff. They are given the tools to work with.
Before I start pointing fingers, I have to say one thing:; Torgeir Bjarmann in my eyes is a legend onthe field. He played 300 games for us, and since I came to Norway, I can counton one hand the games in which I thought he played poorly. But Bjaramnn hasn’tplayed a game for LSK for a long time. So what he has given to LSK on the pitchas a player must should be separated for what he has done off it. Its his performance as “Sporting Director” a position he has held since 1st January2009, and spanned 3 and a half years, I’d like to write about.
A sporting director has one sole responsibility. The sporting side of the administration.Managers and coaches will come and go. As will players for that matter....
Bjarmanns saving grace
Bjarmann came into a club which was drowning in debt and going towards relegation. He and Henning Berg stopped that, and for that both men deserve credit. But after two years ofwatching Lillestrøm stagnate, Berg got the bullet. Because Bjarmann correctly saw that LSK needed fresh finance, and Uncle Per wasn’t going towatch Henning piss away his money on giving new contracts to players such as Karim Fucking Essidiri.
New Coach – New Beginning
Magnus Haglund has come in, and in my eyes,he’s done a good, solid but perhaps not great job so far. 6 out of 10. I seewhat he Haglund has brought to us. A new passing style in which the ball does the work, rather than a game based on laying compact and breaking at speed asHenning drilled into the team. But Henning and Magnus are two different people in two different positions, financially and playing wise.
FIRST TEAM SQUAD
After 3 years, its safe to say that this squad is now entirely Bjarmanns. But in it, I see aseries of problems. To illustrate how unbalanced the squad is, I’m going to list the players in their primary positions, rather than those than they can do a job in. (I meanMessi could play left-back, but you’d prefer to see him playing in attack, forexample):Logi (GK)Ramovic (GK); Stoor (RB), Pedersen (RB), Jeppe (RB), Nystuen(CB), Kippe (CB),Scheel (CB), Hoibråten (CB), Ringstad (LM) Guy Roger (DCM),PVM (CM), Johan(ACM), Midtgaarden (ACM) Lunan Gabrielsen (???-CM?), Palmi (RM),Ohi (RM) Bolly(RM), Knudson (RM), Solberg (RM) BBS (A), Luke (A), Lille Bukken(A) – Gilbert isn’t included as I believe he wont ever play for us again When Ilook at this squad, I see a natural unbalance in it. Five right sided midfielders?Three right backs? No airiel threat up front? I’m seriously worried here. Had any Premier League team (even a Swansea or a Norwich had such an unbalanced squad, every journalist in the land would be writing about how poor managed the club was).
Youth policy
I again look at the total picture under Torgeir and what he has improved since he came to the club, and I’m shocked atwhat I see in all honesty. The few youngsters which have come through into the first team have serious technical issues, which need to be addressed and should have already been addressed. Why the fuck haven’t they been dealt with? A number of the players in question have actually gone backwards in terms of development. Can anyone tell me what Ruben Lunan Gabrielsens best position is?Right back? Centre of defence? Holding midfielder? I’ve asked him myself and he’s said “Ill playanywhere Im needed”;which is a fantastic statement to make. But, I’d like tohim have been told by a someone “In two years Ruben, you’ll be controlling ourmidfield” or “You’re the one who’ll be takingover from Frode at the back”. Cananyone tell me who was the last Norwegian born and raised LSK’er to come intothe team and play each week? Bolly is 22, nearly 23 and cant be seen as apromising youngster anymore. Whats his best position? Can youseriously seeanyone besides perhaps Hoibråten being here in 3\4 years time? I can’t.
LSK 2and "rekruttlaget" We are still playing against the likes ofSkjetten 2. Youngsters don’t want to come to Lillestrøm and go from being aplayer of merit in the 1st division and be forced into playing in the 3rdfor LSK2, knowing that they wont go straight into the 1st team. I’mtold that the likes of Colin N’Kee had to leave Lillestrøm for the sake of their careers. That’s worrying. Think about that. Our most promising youngsters having to leave Lillestrøm and play for Strømmen. I thought that I’d never see the day.
Player recruitment
I think that player recruitment in Lillestrøm under Bjarmann has been shoddy at best. Yes, we’ve been lucky and hit the jackpot three times in BBS, Nosa and Ujah, but otherwise it’s been a shambles. Why do you sign a striker in Luke Rogers unseen? Where is the planning? Or the scouting? Do you sign someone because Erik Soler says so? Why do you let amidfielder who oozes class in Gislason (Someone who wanted to play for LSK andasked for a 2 year deal) go around Europe and sign him again in a blind panicthree months later, totally unfit? And then after letting him go once, do lethim go again? Why does Bjarmann as a Sporting Director sign the likes of Midtgaarden and Scheel on what I am led to believe, quite high wages, and never ever play them. Why pay 1.8 million for Johann Andersson to be the centerpiece for your team, onlyfor two months later to give 2.6 million a year to another player who plays inthe same position; Was the signing in an area we needed tostrengthen, such as left-back? No.
Scouting
Seriously…Do wehave scouts? Who oversees this department or what is our scouting policy? Twoof our three jewels were given to us on a plate by a Nigerian agent. How onhell are we going to sign the next BBS if all we are doing is fumbling like avirgin under the covers? I mean… it appears that VG is doing our scouting bynaming players and Bjarmann saying that “We are tracking them”: Torstein Helstad is now linked to us. And he’s 35. And he’s not getting any better. Why not Boven or Tarik who are younger and will get better? And could be sold on for a much higher fee than we paid?
Player retention:
Whilst there is no doubt that there are much better leagues than the NorwegianTippeligaen andbigger clubs who take the cream of the crop, I seriously have to ask why certainplayers have been retained and am mystified to why others were let go. Wouldyou have given Steinar a new deal at the age of 37? I wouldn’t. Would you havesigned players to the caliberof Paul Obifuele, so shite that they end up in theFinnish 2nd division? Finances were and have been tight, I’ll agree, but I could list at least 6 players I wouldn’t ever have touched with a barge pole and at least 6 more than I would have retained, whereas LSK meant thatthey were surplus to requirements. Isn’t it Bjarmann who has the last say inthese matters?
Let me end this thread by saying that I knowfor a fact that TB puts a hell of a lot of hours, hell a lot of his life intothis club. Its a job many people wouldn’t be able to take on. And he is, asI've already stated, a living legend. As of press, the club is currently layingaround 14th place. And we've not been out of the bottom third at the end of theseason since TB came to the club. TB and others should recongise that he has to take his part of the blame for that.
